The University of Missouri founded the world’s first permanent faculty of journalism in 1908, after almost thirty years of agitation from the Missouri Press Association. Students in the journalism sequence produced the weekly University Missourian, which survives today because the every day Columbia Missourian, in between taking courses on reporting, enhancing, and design, in addition to the common college sequence.
As the British departed, they ceded by treaty a grand wilderness often known as the Northwest Territory that extended to the west banks of the Mississippi River, eventually becoming the states of Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Congress wrote ahead-pondering legislation, setting apart ample lands in every township for faculties. Yet as the 1803 Louisiana Purchase expanded the territory of the United States, and commerce grew in economic significance, national curiosity within the classical lives of the Romans and Greeks declined. Grammar faculties turned much less dominant, and languages corresponding to French and German had been more widely taught exterior ethnic communities. As immigrants from Germany, Scotland, and Ireland fled to America looking for economic opportunity in the early 1700s, however, free colleges like those within the North had been ultimately based. Church of England clergy were active in the administration of these free colleges.
